  1. This scene makes me nostalgic. Three or more variants. A whorl, a knot, a burl. If there were a road, I could drive it. Los Lobos could be playing. This image almost makes me cry. If I thought about how lonely my life is, I could cry. New Mexico, Arizona, Texas: I’m not sure which, and have no clue where. A blue horizon topped by sunset—like the arrival of more light not the start of night. 2020 but I’m thinking of 1987. I’m a sports agent and I drive a red BMV convertible with butterscotch interiors and rosewood panels.

  2. Desolation shouldn’t look so peaceful, so comforting. I’d walked for 2 hours already, keeping the compass pointing North. My shoes had held up surprisingly well, and I only had one small blister in the making, skin rubbed raw when I rolled my left foot a little too much. I was more used to riding, but a horse would have drawn too much attention. Only the princesas rode, and I wasn’t one, not anymore. Now, I was a trovadora. I adjusted the cuatro on my back and continued on. Only 4 more hours until freedom.
