  1. We seek until we find more, over their back roads and over the tufts of their trees. Only in the darkness do we fly, for that is when most of them are asleep, and that is when it is easiest to insert the mind hooks and pull them out a window and up into our ships. Often, we use the clouds as cover, because some of them like to go out at night, in the darkness when their kind should be sleeping. But we don’t mind them at all—they are the easiest to catch and often taste the best.

  2. The road looked like a long sliver string in the grey evening. It struck solidly east before languidly veering to the north where the trees seemed to thicken. Malcolm strained his eyes to see a flicker of light along the thin stretch, feeling his pupils widen as the night grew darker. The low scub and sparse trees weren’t enough to break the horizon and the thin line of dusk colored to a sudden orange red before settling to the purple of night. The fire-tower under him swayed slightly in the gathering breeze, creaking and filling the air with a mournful wail.
